Imagine being able to control all the lighting in your home from the front door. Or you can open or close your garage door from your favorite easy chair. How about adjusting the thermostat from the comfort of your bed? How many times have you left your house during the day only to return at night to a dark house? Now you can simply turn on your porch lights from your car as you pull up the driveway.
Home Control is not just affordable and easy to implement, but has now become a necessity to help reduce energy costs. From lighting and appliance control to security and heating/cooling automation.

Even though it’s known by a laundry list of names, phantom load, idle current, vampire power and wall wart, this “phantom power” all does the same thing. Its sucks energy from the grid and money out of your pocket. There are many gadgets in todays homes that draw this phantom power even when they are switched off or not in use, just by being plugged in. Even though it is a trickle draw, it can and will add up over time.
Everything from your cell phone chargers, digital cameras, computer monitors, televisions and DVD player all draw a constant stream of power right from the second you plug them in, even if they are not in use. These phantom loads are defiantly growing. The average Canadian home already has 25 or even more products that use standby power and these products are consuming power 24 hours a day 365 days a year. It is estimated that phantom power accounts for as much as 10 percent of the average household’s annual electricity consumption.
“Home owners should be concerned about phantom loads because of the proliferation of many stand by products that invariably affect your hydro bill. As you bring more products into your house that use energy in stand-by mode your hydro bill will be higher even if you are buying energy efficient products” said Anne Wilkins, a senior manager with Natural Resources Canada.
While power cords work for certain electronics, very few of us would want the inconvenience of plugging and unplugging televisions, microwave and refrigerators. But how about if we can turn off these energy draining devices with a flick of a switch? How about putting a switch at your front door that will turn these all off when you leave the house only to turn them back on when you return. By the way, an added bonus is that you can also do it remotely using your smart phone or laptop connected to the internet. We can put your refrigerator on a timer so it will shut off for 2 or more hours a day when your not home. There is an endless amount of ways in which we can reduce or remove these “Phantom Loads.”

Some of use have been doing this for years but at least its official now, SmartLabs/SmartHome just announced that they now officially support 3-phase electrical environments. See below for the official announcement.
For years, dealer-installers have been successfully using INSTEON-compatible products in three-phase electrical environments. To-date, SmartLabs had not publicly stated support for these types of installations. But now after the successful launch of several wire-in, dual-band products, as well as extensive testing, SmartLabs is delighted to announce formal support for three-phase installations.
INSTEON is currently managing many high profile commercial buildings in the US, and even some overseas. These buildings range in size from 5,000 SF to 600,000 SF and include office buildings, industrial buildings, sporting arenas as well as a foreign embassy campus in Washington, DC. SmartLabs also uses INSTEON to control and manage its own 60,000 SF facilities. “We hugely benefit by ‘eating our own cooking’. It helps us identify opportunities early and has provided significant savings on our energy bills” says Joe Dada, CEO.

Welcome to our brand new “social media” inspired website. I guess the most logical first blog would be an introduction to our company and explain how this product works. Basically the product is called “Insteon devices” made by a company in California named ” Smarthome”. Smarthome has been in business since 1992 and has become the worlds largest home automation retailer.
So the obvious question is what makes Insteon so different and why should I care?
The Difference is……
Well, the difference is that Insteon uses your homes infrastructure as a way of communicating with each device. In other words, they are using your homes existing wiring to send signals between Insteon devices. These signals will tell lights to turn on or off, adjust the temperature of your house, open or close drapes and almost anything else that you can think of. It is total home automation without the mess or expense of re running control wires from each switch to a central controller. Also there is the remote control factor which adds a whole new level of cool. You know that universal remote you walk around with to control all of your electronics? Well, how about you use that to control all your lights or your irrigation system or your swimming pool pump. Yes, I know very cool stuff indeed. Your remote control truly in your friend.
I Should Care Because……
Well that’s easy, you should care because this is a green alternative to what you are currently doing. If that’s not incentive enough then you should care because it will cost you money if you don’t look at some kind of energy management. The cost of all types is energy, be it electricity or natural gas is not going down anytime soon. This is something you can do to get control of your energy costs right now.
Oh did I forget to mention that all this can also be done from your smartphone or computer from anywhere in the world? Or that we can add a camera or sensor to your front door so you can receive an email when someone comes home or when the door opens? How about those lights in your house that have that inconvenient switch location? I can go on all day with different uses for this in your house.
Keep checking back , we will be putting all kinds of cool ideas on here, explaining the products and showing you how to save money.
Thanks for reading our first ever social media type blog.
